Project details...

The existing galley style kitchen and WC located in the rear annex is demolished and replaced with a simple single storey extension which provides a light, spacious and open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area with small but functional utility and pantry. A new cloak room is added off the existing lobby and the existing lounge is separated from the extension by crittall style internal glazed partitions which allow borrowed light from the south facing lounge to flood into the extension.

Externally the extension is clad with charred timber cladding which contrasts with the existing white render with full height sliding glass doors that connects internal and external spaces.
The loft is converted to provide an additional bedroom with en-suite. This is achieved without sacrificing space at first floor level.

R Robins, Client
Charred timber cladding, also know as Yakisugi or more commonly as Shou Sugi Ban in the UK, is a traditional Japanese method of wood preservation. By slightly charring the surface of the wood it becomes water-proof through the carbonisation and is thus more durable whilst also protects against insects and making it fire retardent.
It is becoming more and more poppular in the UK and is a great alternative to more common external finishes and can add warmth, contract and texture and requires very little maintenance. It works well with contemporary and traditional buildings. It is available in a range of tones and textures which is ahieved by varying the degree of charring.
