The brief for this project was to extend the first floor to provide more spacious bedrooms and to replace the existing large upvc conservatory to the rear with a singe storey extension. The client complained that the traditional conservatory, with glazing to all windows and a fully glazed roof, was only usable for short times of the day at certain periods of the year- it was either too cold or too warm. The solution was to replace the conservatory with an insulated cavity wall structure with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors to one elevation and a number of glazed rooflights within the new flat roof. Drawings were prepared to reflect the clients brief but since in our view it wasn't the best use of space we offered an alternative layout which opened up the existing house into the new extension creating a modern, bright and spacious open plan kitchen, dining and living space. The client had not considered this option but soon realised the benefits once presented with three dimensional drawings showing the potential of the space.

The proposed extension to the rear and the first floor side extension is relativey simple but requires careful detailing to integrate the new additions as seamless as possible. New structural steelwork is concealed within the structure wherever possibe to avoid visible columns and beams and the first floor side extension is constructed over an existing single leaf wall by use of steelwork to avoid having demolishing the existing garage and utility- which the client wanted to avoid. Evans Architectural have the vision, technical knowledge and expertise to ensure the design is working hard technically to ensure the aesthetics are not compromised.
The position and size of windows and rooflights were carefully considered to ensure that the extension benifitted from direct sunlight during mornings and evenings. The new large Cortizo Cor Vision Plus sliding glass doors open up to allow a seamless transition between garden and living space. These doors have very narrow profiles which are detailed to be recessed at the jamb and head which gives a very contemporary look with minimal frame in view.
